The U.S. Embassy in Pristina stated that Kosovo’s leadership must cooperate in forming institutions, as the ongoing political deadlock is, in their view, harming Kosovo.

In response to the Constitutional Court’s decision on the constitution of the Kosovo Assembly, the U.S. Embassy emphasized that citizens expect leaders to fulfill their obligations, and that it is time for the leadership to prioritize progress and stability.

“The Constitutional Court has issued a decision, and the political leadership must work together to form institutions in accordance with the Constitution and the decisions of the Constitutional Court. The people of Kosovo expect their leaders to fulfill their obligations to act in the best interests of the country. This ongoing political deadlock results in missed opportunities for Kosovo. It is time for the leadership to prioritize progress and stability for the benefit of the citizens,” the statement reads, as reported by Koha.

The Constitutional Court of Kosovo ruled that Members of the Assembly must elect the president of the legislative body through a public vote within 30 days of the decision’s entry into force. The Court found that the presiding officer of the session, Avni Dehari, failed to act in accordance with a previous ruling, and therefore declared all continuations of the constitutive session held from 27 June to 6 July invalid.
