Zecevic: The West will try to leverage the CSM by affirming Kosovo internationally
Scientific advisor at the Institute of European Studies, Slobodan Zecevic, stated that the West would try to leverage the establishment of the Community of Serb-majority Municipalities by promoting Kosovo's international recognition.
Commenting on the statement of the US Ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, who said the idea that the CSM would exist, and in return, Serbia would "step back" and enable Kosovo to seek membership in the international community, Zecevic says that it the exact meaning of participation in international organizations is questionable.
"It is questionable what exactly participating in international organizations means. Does it include participation in the United Nations, as the UN is an international organization? That is a big question now. A significant number of countries on the international scene do not recognize the independence of Kosovo, which is a fact they overlook. To achieve all of this, recognition and consent from Serbia are necessary. In that sense, we should expect greater pressure on Serbia in the coming period. They will certainly try to capitalize on Kosovo's affirmation, which would be the realization of their plan for Kosovo's independence to be recognized by the entire world, including all EU members", Zecevic believes.
He states that the essence of the draft of the Franco-German plan, on the one hand, is the CSM, and on the other hand, Kosovo's participation in international organizations is included in that plan, which Hill constantly emphasizes.
According to Zecevic, Serbia, on the other hand, is attempting to "buy time" and wait for more favorable circumstances.
"As far as I've seen, Serbia's policy is trying to avoid being put on the agenda because the Western machinery is powerful when they portray you as the villain in media discussions first, and then there are sanctions and the like. By yielding in some matters, Serbia is trying to avoid that Western machinery and wait for a more favorable moment if there are changes in the European Parliament, and changes in the US after the elections, to then decide what to do next. It is trying to gain time now and avoid being targeted. Of course, this is very complicated and difficult. What is the essence of it all? They want to ethnically cleanse Kosovo. The West is an accomplice in cleansing Kosovo of its Christian population and its civilization and culture. I don't know if anyone has fully understood what they are doing. They think that with the CSM, they will stop something, but the CSM is one segment. I believe that a much different policy towards the Albanians is needed to stop this process", Zecevic states.
