Kodheli: Presiding over the Security Council is important for the image of Albania; we are always on the side of Kosovo
The Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Parliament of Albania, Mimi Kodheli, told Kosovo Online that the country's presidency of the United Nations Security Council is important for Albania's image. Although she looks critically at the fact that the political elite in Pristina is delaying the dialogue with Serbia, she points out that Albania will always stand by Kosovo.
"I think it is an important historical moment. Albania is presiding over the Security Council for the second time, and this time it is also significant that the session of the United Nations General Assembly opens in New York, to which all the countries of the world send their highest representatives, presidents, and prime ministers. It increases public, political, and geopolitical attention. This means that Albania, a small country, takes on a different significance. This is one side of the coin. The other side is the seriousness with which the Security Council should be approached and the importance of the issues to be discussed. This is especially important now that we have a war on Europe's doorstep that must be resolved and must be the subject of high-level meetings anywhere in the world. Albania is at the right time, in the right place, and I hope that we will make the right decisions with all those countries that are on the right side of history," Kodheli said.
On the other hand, Kodheli, who is also a former Minister of Defense, commenting on the situation in Kosovo and in the region, expressed the hope that it would get better. Without pointing names, she accuses the political elite in Pristina of stalling the dialogue with Serbia, stressing that Albania will always stand by Kosovo.
"I believe that the moment we live in should not have been the way it is. That, despite the great efforts that have been made to reach a functional agreement, to be a part of the process that will bring the Western Balkans to a long balance. The reality of Kosovo today is clear and affects the life of every person in the region. I think this kind of thing happens when people are powerless to sit down and make a deal. This requires courage, but it also requires an open mind, it also requires a desire to solve things. If we are always based on national sentiments, I believe we will never get anywhere. I do not believe that this situation is acceptable to all parties. In this period, it is necessary to implement the Franco-German Agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, so I believe that we will witness the results of the talks. We, as the Albanian Government, are a great guarantee that we will never interfere in the internal affairs of any country, but we must boldly say that we are always on the side of Kosovo and will continue to be so. This thing comes naturally to us. Also, we will always be on the right side of history," Kodheli said.
Before the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a High-Level Political Forum for sustainable development is being held in New York, in which the President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, participated and gave a speech.
