Sociologist from Pristina, Artan Muhaxhiri, stated that despite the decline, Kosovo still maintains a positive natural population growth rate, while lower birth rates have been influenced by migration and economic challenges.

“National population policy has changed in recent decades. Previously, there were around 30,000 births annually, but last year only 10,888 children were born. That is still a positive trend, but it is noticeably lower than before,” Muhaxhiri told Kosovo Online.

He emphasized that several factors have contributed to the lower birth rate, with migration and economic problems being the most significant.

“According to official data, about 32,000 people emigrated from Kosovo last year. Economic issues and the lack of a clear perspective, challenges common across the Balkans, are also at play. All these factors have influenced Kosovo’s current birth rate. According to census data, Kosovo has 1.6 million inhabitants, although there had been talk of higher numbers. Nevertheless, this is the official figure,” the sociologist explained.

He noted that the Government of Kosovo has initiated several projects aimed at encouraging population growth.

“Primarily to provide economic support to young couples. Additionally, assistance for children and new mothers has been increased. It was also announced that housing blocks would be built for economically disadvantaged young couples, allowing them to buy apartments at very low prices. However, that hasn’t materialized,” Muhaxhiri said.
