Young people across the region are interested in seasonal jobs, with hospitality positions on the Adriatic coast – particularly in Croatia and Montenegro – being the most appealing, according to Miloš Turinski, spokesperson for Infostud. He added that interest in agricultural seasonal work in Serbia has been declining for years.

“Young people are certainly interested in seasonal jobs, but it is important to make a clear distinction and point out which jobs actually attract them and why. The most attractive are hospitality jobs on the Adriatic coast, especially in Croatia and Montenegro,” Turinski told Kosovo Online.

He added that, on the other hand, interest among young people in agricultural jobs in Serbia, which involve outdoor work, has been decreasing year after year, creating a serious labor shortage in that sector.

“These are physically demanding jobs, often requiring 12 or more hours of work a day. Although the daily wage is quite good and workers can earn around €50 per day, young people still prefer jobs on the Adriatic because they believe they offer the best of both worlds – spending time by the sea while doing somewhat less demanding work. However, what many young people fail to realize is that hospitality jobs are not easy either. Monthly earnings are good, but employees often work more than 10 hours a day, six days a week, leaving them with only one day off for leisure and personal activities,” Turinski explained.

According to him, young people from across the region are willing to travel abroad for seasonal employment.

“They most often choose Croatia and Montenegro because they combine business with pleasure – they get to be by the sea while doing jobs they find more attractive. However, that is not the only reason. They also choose these countries because of the language and the ease of communication, especially people coming from Serbia. Salaries are another important factor behind the popularity of these jobs. It is not only hospitality positions that attract workers. The Adriatic coast offers a wide range of employment opportunities. There are various kitchen support roles, as well as demand for hotel entertainers, photographers, receptionists, and professionals working in different areas of tourism. The range of available jobs is quite diverse. As a result, the overall job market is broader and offers more opportunities, which explains the much greater interest among people from across the region in seeking seasonal work on the Adriatic coast, particularly in Croatia, which has a larger tourism industry and therefore a greater number of job openings,” Turinski concluded.
