Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Milan Antonijevic has addressed the European Network of Equality Bodies (EQUINET), drawing attention to the incidents that occurred during the Vidovdan commemoration at Gazimestan and expressing concern over reports of discriminatory treatment of members of the Serbian community.

Antonijevic noted that Vidovdan is one of the most significant dates in the religious, historical, and cultural identity of the Serbian people, making the manner in which it is commemorated an important indicator of respect for equality, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and the right to peaceful assembly, according to a statement issued by his office.

He pointed out that, according to available information and eyewitness accounts, a number of incidents were reported during the commemoration, including selective security checks, the confiscation of flags, the removal of clothing bearing national and religious symbols, and the detention of a large number of participants, including minors, women, and parents with young children.

Antonijevic also expressed particular concern over reports that some media crews from Serbia were obstructed and intimidated while covering the event, whereas other journalists were allowed to carry out their work without interference.

In his letter, he stressed the need for all allegations of discriminatory treatment, abuse of authority, intimidation of journalists, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and ill-treatment to be investigated promptly, independently, and impartially.

The Commissioner called on all relevant authorities to ensure full respect for the rights of the Serbian community and all other communities in Kosovo, prevent all forms of discrimination, and enable religious and cultural commemorations to be held peacefully, safely, and with dignity.

Antonijevic also called on EQUINET member bodies to continue monitoring developments in the areas of equality protection, minority rights, and the prohibition of discrimination.
