Becirovic on Kurti's appointment of Rasic: Politically unhealthy and not wise

Serbs and Albanians changed their historical roles. In the recent past, Serbs had been looking for suitable Albanians to fill positions, and we knew how that ended. At that moment we had a situation where Albanians were looking for suitable Serbs and appointing them to leadership positions, Zijad Becirovic, director of the IFIMES from Ljubljana, told Kosovo Online after Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti had appointed Nenad Rasic to the post of Minister for Communities and Returns.

Becirovic states that now "the question arises whether such appointments have the support of the majority of the ten Serbian MPs in the Kosovo Assembly, which calls into question the constitutionality of their election or appointment because there has been a violation of the constitution".

"Politically, it is unhealthy and not at all wise, and a serious and responsible politician would not engage in it," Becirovic says.

He believes that "Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is under unprecedented pressure".

"He is required to sign a comprehensive legally binding agreement on the normalization of relations between the official Belgrade and Pristina. Considering that Vucic has a capillary knowledge of international relations and world politics, he is aware of the fact that there are no firm guarantees for reaching such an agreement. He is probably thinking about the Minsk agreement from 1993, on the basis of which Ukraine handed over its entire nuclear arsenal to Russia in exchange for its security and independence, and we are witnessing what happened to it. The EU's reaction to the situation in Kosovo and the appointments are surprising, which confirms that the EU is taking a superficial approach one of the most complex open issues in Europe, and EU spokesman Peter Stano makes careless and meaningless statements".

When it comes to the EU, Becirovic points out that "the EU learned very little from the failed EULEX mission in Kosovo and the wasted several billion euros of taxpayers' money."

"The only solution that might be acceptable is for the signatories of a comprehensive legally binding agreement on the normalization of relations to become full members of the EU by signing that agreement. Everything else can hardly lead to a sustainable solution. Therefore, the reactions and caution of President Vucic are not surprising. That is why the EU cannot avoid its responsibility for the situation in Kosovo and the Western Balkans. EU delegations in the countries of the Western Balkans are breeding grounds for corruption and crime," Becirovic says.
