Analyst Blerim Canaj stated that the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh in the Azerbaijan–Armenia dispute and Kosovo represent two “different dimensions” of problems, and that the EU and the US are aligned on the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina.

Commenting on the peace agreement signed by Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House, mediated by US President Donald Trump, and whether a similar model could be applied to Kosovo, Canaj said these are entirely different issues.

“It is different. If we look at history, Kosovo became independent due to the breakup of Yugoslavia. Kosovo was part of a federation, and we cannot view it as the same case as Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan. These are not the same things,” Canaj told Kosovo Online.

He emphasized that there are some similarities between the two cases, but only in the sense that the US mediated the signing of the Washington Agreement.

Everything else, he repeats, is different.

“The ideas and dimensions in the Kosovo issue are different,” the analyst clarified.

According to him, both the US and the EU approach the Kosovo issue in the same way.

“It is not in the EU’s interest to have any problems in Europe. The same applies to the US. So, on the question of the Kosovo–Serbia dialogue, they are now on the same path, sharing the same idea. All they want is an agreement after which the problems we face – not just us, but also the EU and the US – will no longer exist. That is why they are aligned,” Canaj concluded.
