Djuric: It is important for Serbia’s voice in support of international law to be heard at the UN

Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric stated today, ahead of his address at the high-level session of the United Nations Security Council in New York, that it is of great importance for Serbia’s voice to be heard in that international forum, particularly regarding support for the principles of international law and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states.

“In light of the historic visit of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to China, Serbia has been accorded yet another honor. Today in New York, the Serbian delegation is participating, at China’s invitation, in a session of the UN Security Council, chaired this month by China, dedicated to the principles of the UN Charter, international law, and the preservation of the global order based on multilateralism. It is important for Serbia that its voice be heard in the highest body of the United Nations, especially regarding support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states, which, in the case of our country, have been undermined and called into question,” Djuric said.

He emphasized that it is important for Serbia, as a country firmly committed to the principles upon which the United Nations was established as a forum for resolving conflicts, to clearly raise its voice against violations of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states and in favor of respect for public international law.

“Against wars, and in favor of stability and cooperation among states — these are the values Serbia stands for,” Minister Djuric underlined.

He announced that a series of important meetings await him tomorrow in New York, including one with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, which, as he noted, will round off the broader picture of President Vucic’s historic visit to China.

“This is a good day for affirming our position that international law is more important than particular interests, that the use of force in international relations is unacceptable, and that peace is a universal value upon which the security, stability, and progress of the world rest. We do not need to reinvent the wheel, because international laws, regulations, charters, and principles already exist — we simply need to reaffirm them together,” Djuric added.

The session titled “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the International System with the UN at Its Core” is being held as part of the current presidency of the UN Security Council by China.
