Five members of the US Congress introduce resolution to establish Serbian-American Heritage Month

Following a series of diplomatic activities and intensive cooperation with members of the United States Congress, a resolution has been introduced in the US House of Representatives proposing that February be designated as Serbian-American Heritage Month, the Serbian Embassy in the United States announced.

"The resolution was introduced by Members of Congress Claudia Tenney (New York), Emanuel Cleaver (Missouri), Scott Fitzgerald (Wisconsin), Anna Paulina Luna (Florida), and Victoria Spartz (Indiana), demonstrating strong bipartisan support for the initiative to recognize the history, culture, and contributions of the Serbian community to the development of the United States," the embassy said in a Facebook post.

The proposed resolution highlights that Serbs in America have made significant contributions to the development of American society since the 19th century in the fields of science, medicine, technology, business, the military, public service, culture, the arts, and sports.

It also emphasizes the historic alliance between the Republic of Serbia and the United States during the First and Second World Wars, the contribution of Nikola Tesla to the development of modern civilization, as well as Operation Halyard, the largest rescue operation of Allied airmen behind enemy lines in history.

"The selection of February is not accidental. During that month, the Republic of Serbia celebrates its Statehood Day, and the proposed Serbian-American Heritage Month would provide an opportunity each year to organize educational, cultural, and public programs across the United States dedicated to the history, achievements, and heritage of the Serbian-American community," the embassy stated.

The embassy expressed its appreciation to the Members of Congress who supported the initiative.

"We believe it will contribute to further strengthening the friendship between the Republic of Serbia and the United States, as well as to increasing public awareness in America of the contributions made by Americans of Serbian descent to the development of American society," the Serbian Embassy in the United States added.

Congresswoman Claudia Tenney of New York, who introduced the resolution in the House of Representatives, said the measure honors Serbian Americans, their history, heritage, and lasting contributions.

"Today, I introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate February as Serbian American Heritage Month. For generations, Serbian Americans have helped shape our nation and strengthen the bond between the United States and Serbia. This resolution honors their history, heritage, & lasting contributions," Tenney wrote on the social media platform X.
