NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Partnerships Kevin Hamilton stated, regarding Pristina’s announcement on the establishment of a gendarmerie, that any issue concerning security in Kosovo requires consultation with KFOR and NATO institutions.

Hamilton told Kosovo Online that NATO has taken note of the idea of establishing a gendarmerie in Kosovo.

“We need more information about that idea. Any issue concerning security in Kosovo must be consulted with KFOR and NATO institutions. We hope to receive more information,” said Hamilton, who today attended the conclusion of a joint exercise between the Serbian Armed Forces and NATO at the Borovac training ground near the “South” base.

The idea of forming a gendarmerie in Kosovo was announced by Pristina several days ago.

Kosovo’s caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti said late last night in a conversation with US congressmen that the gendarmerie is not intended as a replacement for KFOR, but that it will cooperate with it.
