Svecla: Kosovo Gendarmerie is being formed

Kosovo’s acting Interior Minister Xhelal Svecla announced that he has today signed the establishment of a Working Group that will conduct an analysis and propose modalities for the functioning of the Kosovo Gendarmerie as an agency within the ministry.

“The Republic of Kosovo Gendarmerie is being formed. The Gendarmerie represents an important step in the consolidation of our security architecture, with a clear mission to guarantee a strong state presence in function of preserving borders, our territorial integrity and sovereignty, protection from terrorism, management of high-risk unrest, and protection of critical infrastructure,” Svecla wrote on Instagram.

He added that the Kosovo Gendarmerie will “significantly strengthen capacities for preventing, managing, and neutralizing threats that endanger the security of citizens and the territorial integrity of Kosovo.”

The formation of the Gendarmerie was announced yesterday by Kosovo’s acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

“We will form a Gendarmerie in the next mandate. The Gendarmerie will mainly deal with combating crime and corruption in border areas. It will fight terrorism... The Gendarmerie is something between the police and the army. You know, Italy has the Carabinieri and France has gendarmes. We will have our own Gendarmerie in the Republic of Kosovo,” Kurti said in the “Interaktiv” program on KTV.
