Hasani: Kurti’s conviction is anti-Americanism, but he hides it to preserve votes
Former President of the Constitutional Court, Enver Hasani, spoke about Kosovo’s relations with the United States and assessed that Kosovo’s caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti is, in ideological terms, “anti-American.”
Speaking on Kosovo–US relations, Hasani said there are two factors: the first is structural, relating to the general state of today’s international relations and America’s role in them; the second concerns Kurti’s psychological and ideological profile.
International relations, Hasani explained, have been in a process of redefinition for years, which takes decades. On the other hand, he said, Kurti “has anti-Americanism as a conviction.”
“As for the psychological and ideological profile of Albin Kurti, I followed him for a while, had conversations with him, read him, observed him... Mr. Kurti is a far-left anti-imperialist, above all in the sense of anti-Americanism, that is his conviction. He and a certain circle of people I know – the literature they read, the discourse they have developed and continue to develop, all reflect various ideological strands of anti-imperialism,” Hasani said for Betimi per Drejtesi, as reported by Reporteri.
According to Hasani, Kurti concealed these convictions in order to preserve votes.
“But he belongs to a far-left current where this is a matter of belief, and he continues to hide it. He has hidden it since coming to power, knowing the general sentiment of the people of Kosovo, with the goal of keeping votes. Politically, that is entirely legitimate. And it goes on, until at some point you realize that even ideology has its limits,” Hasani concluded.
The former President of the Constitutional Court also spoke about the differences between former President Ibrahim Rugova and Albin Kurti.
“The difference is like night and day, they are diametrically opposed,” Hasani said.
He described Rugova as an intellectual. Kurti, however, he said, has limited education in the social sciences.
“With Kurti, it is clear to see that he has limited education in the social sciences. Very limited. And that discourse, that knowledge one can observe in him, generally speaking, is what I often call ‘Wikipedia knowledge.’ It is not systematic. It is knowledge used more to impress others than as deep understanding. I’ll add that I have also heard him speak about art history and the history of the Renaissance, meaning those are areas in which his knowledge is considerably more superficial,” Hasani concluded.
