Jevtic appeals to White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships for help in safeguarding the fundamental rights of Serbs in Kosovo
Vice President of the Serb List, Dalibor Jevtic, today sent a letter to the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, drawing the urgent attention of U.S. officials to what he described as escalating repression and the systematic violation of the human rights of the Serbian community in Kosovo, particularly during today's Vidovdan commemoration at Gazimestan.
"Today, on Vidovdan—a holy day of profound historical and spiritual significance for Orthodox Christians—these pressures reached a critical point at the Gazimestan memorial," Jevtic wrote in the letter, which Kosovo Online said it had reviewed.
He added that worshippers had been denied their fundamental rights to freedom of expression and freedom of religion.
Jevtic also pointed to what he described as a deeply troubling trend of arbitrary arrests targeting members of the Serbian community in Kosovo, stating that such actions have heightened fear and instability throughout the region.
He further drew attention to what he said was a ban on national and religious symbols, alleging that the local authorities had actively prohibited the display of the Serbian national flag and sacred symbols of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
"The suppression of religious freedoms, the criminalization of cultural identity, and arbitrary detentions stand in direct contradiction to the fundamental values of liberty and regional stability that the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships seeks to uphold. We respectfully call upon the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to examine these ongoing violations, advocate for the protection of Serbian Orthodox heritage, and help ensure the safety and fundamental human rights of the Serbian community in Kosovo," Jevtic wrote.
The vice president of the Serb List made the contents of the letter public in a post on Facebook.
Earlier today, Kosovo Police detained dozens of individuals at Gazimestan following the memorial service held to mark Vidovdan.
