Historian Luka Jovanovic said that by agreeing on the implementation of the Law on Foreigners, Albin Kurti, under pressure from Brussels, “crossed” the line he had set for himself, noting that Kurti realized that failing to fulfill and adhere to the agreement would have significant consequences for him.

Jovanovic notes that although many would say that Kurti won an absolute majority in the parliamentary elections, it is evident that his administration has been in a certain kind of blockade for some time and that Albanians are neither capable nor willing to form a government and enable institutions to function.

According to him, the power of diplomacy always reflects the internal state of every society, that is, its internal stability.

“We could see that the European Union was probably trying to play that card in order, on the one hand, to ensure a channel through which Albin Kurti would accept any kind of agreement, because he absolutely did not want that. On the domestic level he had also positioned himself as a politician unwilling to compromise, as a classic Albanian leader who makes a decision and demands its implementation. This time he crossed that line under pressure from Brussels. He could see that failing to fulfill and respect agreements, as well as refusing to talk with Brussels and Belgrade, would have significant consequences for him,” Jovanovic told Kosovo Online.

He adds that it remains to be seen whether this will have consequences for Kurti on the domestic political scene.

Jovanovic stresses that the most important thing is that Serbian diplomacy managed to show that the Serbian people are an unavoidable factor in agreements in Kosovo.

“The most important thing is that Serbian diplomacy managed to show what is most important for the Serbian people and the state – that the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija are an unavoidable factor in agreements, both at the central level and at the local level, in the ten Serbian municipalities. We can see this through this agreement as well, which is absolutely favorable for the Serbian people and has no consequences for them,” Jovanovic said.
