Kurti: The EU and US are too worried about actions in northern Kosovo
Kosovo's Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, stated that the international community's criticism of the Kosovo government's treatment of the Serbian community is overblown and that the EU and the US are too worried about the actions in northern Kosovo.
"They are worried too much. Every time we take action, there are alarming voices about possible escalation, but here we are – Kosovo is better than ever before," Kurti emphasized in an interview with Bloomberg.
Kurti said that Pristina's actions are "necessary to establish law and order in the long-divided north."
As he emphasized, these are "necessary steps toward asserting control over Serb-majority areas and fully integrating them into Kosovo's legal and financial systems."
"My impression is that precisely because we’re being successful, Belgrade is more nervous and consequently more aggressive," he said.
Regarding Serbia's demand for elections in the north to be held as soon as possible, Kurti stated that general elections will take place next year.
"Voting in the northern municipalities will only take place during the general elections in the fall of next year," Kurti said.
He added that the influence of Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic in Kosovo "is long gone."
"Vucic failed, and now he wants us to pay for his failure," Kurti said.
