Maliqi: It has become clear that an agreement on the president is not possible

Political analyst Shkelzen Maliqi believes that after the June 7 elections Kosovo will once again fall into a political crisis, because no party can win 80 seats in the Kosovo Assembly in order to elect a new president, while it has so far become clear that an agreement on that issue is not possible.

Maliqi told Kosovo Online that Kosovo’s acting prime minister and Self-Determination leader Albin Kurti has so far failed to understand that the position of president is representative of all citizens.

According to him, if a solution is being sought, compromise must also be sought.

“Whether one will be found or not, we will see. Kurti has announced that there will be new elections if he does not get, as he expects, 70 percent of the vote. That is almost impossible,” Maliqi said.

As he stated, it has so far become clear that it is not possible to reach an agreement on the issue of the president, while it would suit Kurti to remain in power in a technical mandate.

“It became evident that it was not possible to reach any kind of agreement. Everyone is now looking at how they will fare in the elections. It was not in line with Kurti’s wishes for the elections to be prolonged at least until the beginning of summer, when the diaspora arrives, so that he could once again get what he received before New Year’s. I think there is no consensus candidate. There are many who are neutral and not affiliated with parties, they could be prominent intellectuals and so on, but Kurti is using this to remain in power, if he could indefinitely, as acting prime minister,” Maliqi said.
