Maliqi: A possible increase in the trend of Kosovo recognition among Islamic countries
Political analyst Shkelzen Maliqi tells Kosovo Online that since some Islamic countries have recognized Kosovo this year, there may be a chance that Indonesia could also change its position on the issue.
Albanian President Bajram Begaj has been lobbying for Indonesia’s recognition. While receiving the credentials of Indonesia’s new ambassador last week, he called on Jakarta to reconsider its stance and recognize Kosovo.
“The President of Albania is likely testing the waters through his connections, since several Islamic countries have already recognized Kosovo. That means there might be a chance that Indonesia will also change its position. It is possible that this is being pushed through Turkey or other channels to strengthen this trend of Islamic countries recognizing Kosovo’s independence,” Maliqi assesses.
He believes that global realignments and the current geopolitical environment seem to be accelerating this process.
“Syria’s defensive position also plays a role, as many countries that once had ties with Belgrade—dating back to Tito’s era and the Non-Aligned Movement—may now be rethinking their stance or pursuing other interests,” Maliqi says.
