Mazreku: Punishing Kosovo from the start was wrong, the EU has other mechanisms

Professor of European Law, Avni Mazreku, assessed that the proposal of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, to lift the measures on Kosovo was expected, but he also added that the Union has other mechanisms to achieve its interests, especially with countries aspiring to become its members.

"My expectation was that Borrell would recommend lifting the measures on Kosovo because those measures never had any significance. The EU has different mechanisms to enforce what is in the interest of the EU and the countries that have expressed a desire to become EU members. These things and these mechanisms are part of how the EU functions," Mazreku said for Kosovo Online.

He added that the punishment of Kosovo by the EU was completely wrong from the start.

He assumes that Borrell did not want to end his mandate with a negative report and sanctions against Kosovo, and that this was important to hear.

"Punishing Kosovo by the EU was completely wrong from the beginning. The decision came as the last phase of someone dealing with EU security policy. He was a former minister of Spain and did not want to conclude his mandate with a negative report and EU sanctions against Kosovo. That is why it was important to hear what he would say and what he would recommend," Mazreku explained.
