Mazreku: Trump exaggerated claim that he prevented war between Kosovo and Serbia
Professor of European Law from Pristina, Avni Mazreku, believes that former U.S. President Donald Trump slightly exaggerated when he claimed to have “prevented a war” between Kosovo and Serbia. He adds, however, that Trump's main argument remains that the Biden administration failed to take necessary steps to implement the agreement reached in Washington.
Donald Trump stated that he prevented a potential war between Kosovo and Serbia during his first term and criticized the Biden administration for making mistakes he vowed to correct.
Commenting on Trump’s statement, Professor Mazreku told Kosovo Online that Trump’s criticism was directed at the steps taken by the Biden administration concerning the agreement reached between Kosovo and Serbia at the end of his first term.
“In my opinion, it was an exceptionally good agreement, although little was done to implement it. Trump managed to bring the President of Serbia and the then Prime Minister of Kosovo into his office and confront them face to face. Meanwhile, under the Biden administration, there has been negligence—no mention of the agreement, and no steps taken toward its implementation. I think it is a hyperbole to say that the Ohrid Agreement between Kosovo and Serbia prevented a war. However, in reality, tensions between them were, at times, very high. The key point in Trump’s statement lies in the fact that appropriate steps were not taken to implement the Washington Agreement. So, I believe saying he prevented a war is somewhat of an exaggeration,” Mazreku explained.
