Former diplomat Zoran Milivojevic assessed for Kosovo Online that today's statement by Miroslav Lajcak claiming that last year's agreement in Brussels was "the best Serbia and Kosovo could have gotten" represented a position that advocated Western interests that were unacceptable for Serbia.

"This is a stance that corresponds to Western interests at this moment. He refers to the Ohrid Agreement, which implies de facto recognition. This is unacceptable for Serbia. Serbia has voiced reservations. Therefore, discussions on this matter can only proceed with the acceptance of Serbia's reservations. Hence, I interpret his stance as representing the interests of Western power centers," Milivojevic said.

He stated that Lajcak, with this statement, had shown himself to be a spokesperson for Western interests at this moment.

"What he is saying, is that this is the best possible outcome for both sides, as far as the Serbian side is concerned, it has nothing to gain. The Serbian side insists only on what is right and just, which is the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia, including Kosovo and Metohija as a part of its territory, and talks about normalization that does not involve status issues," Milivojevic emphasized.

Special Envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue Miroslav Lajcak, after talks with Kosovo's chief negotiator and Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi, stated today that last year's agreement in Brussels was "the best Serbia and Kosovo could have gotten."

"I am sure of that. If there had been a better agreement, it would have already been proposed, so it is in everyone's interest to start implementation because with this agreement, we have answers to what to do and how to do it, and the only question we don't have an answer to is when, and my question is why wait. This agreement is good, and implementation should start as soon as possible. We have spent a lot of time discussing the steps, there is fear on both sides that if they do what is asked of them, will the other side do it too, but I believe that these issues can be easily resolved," Lajcak said.
