Analyst Artan Muhaxhiri believes that the Special Court in The Hague will acquit Hashim Thaci and that his return to Kosovo’s political scene would bring new energy and contribute to the rise of the PDK. This could be bad for the LDK because Thaci, he assesses, would win over the votes of undecided voters.

Muhaxhiri says that Thaci’s return would change the political dynamics, as he is, alongside Ibrahim Rugova, one of the most important political actors in Kosovo over the past decades.

However, he notes that even Thaci must acknowledge that the electorate has changed.

“Today, young people make up the electorate, and we know that young people largely support Mr Kurti and Self-Determination. Therefore, even he will have to adapt his strategy. But I think there will be changes. He will bring change, especially for the PDK. He will inject energy into the political scene, and that will be the best outcome because in the current situation Mr Kurti has no real opponent, which is bad both for him and for Kosovo,” Muhaxhiri told Kosovo Online.

Thaci, he adds, knows how to deal with voters, having served as president and prime minister, and he knows how to engage with the international community.

“I am sure that the PDK will rise, he will change its structure, attract new people, and I think that will benefit the PDK. That could be bad for the LDK because I do not think Mr Thaci would take votes from Self-Determination’s voters, but would instead gain the votes of undecided people, those who did not vote in the last elections. In any case, I think the political scene would be much more dynamic if Mr Thaci adapts to the new context and the changes that have taken place in Kosovo in recent years,” Muhaxhiri concludes.
