Nikovski: A complex situation over Greenland, North Macedonia follows the European Union
Political analyst Risto Nikovski believes that, regarding Greenland, North Macedonia will follow the reactions of the European Union, focusing on its direct and immediate interests. He expressed confidence that a solution for Greenland will be found and that North Macedonia will not be put in a position where it would have to choose between the US and the EU.
Assessing that the current situation related to Greenland is more complex and dangerous than the one involving Venezuela, Nikovski said that this time the Macedonian authorities will not react quickly and support the US, as was the case with the arrest of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela.
“I think they will be much more cautious. They will pay closer attention to how and in what way reactions unfold, and how the European Union behaves. This is an issue of specific interest to America, and the fact is that Trump is determined to go all the way. There are even threats of the use of force. I do not think that will happen. However, although Trump has changed his positions before, so it would not be a surprise if that happened again, I think he will persist in seeking to take over Greenland and that a solution will ultimately be found, so that Macedonia will not be placed in a situation where it has to choose,” Nikovski told Kosovo Online.
He believes that, in the end, a compromise diplomatic and lasting solution will be found that will not lead to new complications and confrontations, but he notes that Trump has changed the way international relations are “conducted” and has created artificial divisions.
“With Trump’s rise to power, a profound revolution in international relations has taken place. Nothing is as it was before, and there will be surprises. There will be moments that are unexpected in many ways. But these current divisions into sovereigntists and globalists are artificial. Such a division does not exist. First, sovereigntism was imposed by Trump. And what he did with Venezuela has nothing to do with sovereigntism. If Venezuela is a sovereign state, one cannot intervene in that way. The changes are dramatic, especially since an old American policy of confrontation with Russia, and more recently with China, has been altered,” Nikovski said, recalling Henry Kissinger’s words that “if things continue like this, a war between America and China is inevitable.”
Regarding Trump’s threats toward other countries, including Canada, Mexico, and Panama, Nikovski said he hopes that the Venezuelan scenario will not be repeated.
“I hope it will not move in the direction of what happened in Venezuela, which was an absolute violation of international law. In our case, sovereignty and territorial integrity are matters that cannot be put on the agenda, they cannot be called into question. I believe that Macedonia will nevertheless pursue a more reasonable policy in the period ahead, in a way that pays greater attention to its direct and immediate interests and that it will not play an international role that does not correspond to our capacities,” Nikovski concluded.
