Spahiu: It is best for Kosovo not to take a position on Greenland
Political analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu believes that the rift between the United States and the European Union over Greenland has put Kosovo in a major dilemma, but that Pristina cannot influence that situation, and that it is best for Kosovo not to take a position, since the US and the EU are Kosovo’s biggest strategic allies.
“The main allies of Kosovo are the US, the United Kingdom, the European community, and Turkey, and Kosovo must act within that framework. In this case, the rift between the US and the European community puts Kosovo in a major dilemma, because it involves its two biggest strategic allies, which places us in an awkward position. It is the same as when a child has to declare whether they are for their father or their mother,” Spahiu told Kosovo Online.
He notes that it is good that Kosovo has not taken a position so far, especially bearing in mind that Pristina’s ally, Turkey, has also not spoken out.
“It is good that Kosovo has not taken a position so far, because it cannot help in any way, and any stance by Kosovo on this issue has no significance, nor does any support for one side or the other. Especially since Turkey, one of Kosovo’s strategic allies, has not taken a position either. If Turkey cannot help here or act as an arbiter, to take a position between the European community and the US, why should Kosovo take a position, when it is a small and insignificant country,” Spahiu said.
He therefore warns that clearly siding for or against the US could only harm Kosovo.
“In situations like this, silence is the best option for Kosovo. To support America verbally in this case goes against Kosovo’s interests. To take a position against America also carries great risks, since America is the country that created Kosovo as a state. So there is no reason to get involved in this matter. It cannot influence anything, and it can only cause harm,” Spahiu concluded.
