Ombudsman with Ambassadors in Kosovo: There is a tendency of attacks on independent institutions
Ombudsman Naim Qelaj organized a meeting with ambassadors in Kosovo on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the institution, during which he stressed the need to strengthen and continue partnerships with allies in the field of human rights, highlighting the issue of attacks on independent institutions.
He mentioned the challenges Kosovo is facing, including the inability to constitute the Assembly, and underlined that during his tenure as Ombudsman, there has been a tendency to attack independent institutions, though he did not specify by whom.
“Lately, the biggest challenge we are facing is the lack of political will to constitute the Assembly of Kosovo and to form the government and other institutions that should function after elections. Over the years that I have served as Ombudsman, I have seen a tendency for independent institutions to be constantly attacked and endangered in various forms, whether through public statements, or through bypassing and ignoring the positions taken by the Ombudsman,” Qelaj added.
The meeting was also attended by the head of the European Union Office in Kosovo, Aivo Orav, who said that the Ombudsperson institution has recorded great achievements in terms of respecting human rights and equality in Kosovo.
“The EU places great emphasis on human rights and freedoms, recognizing the essential role of the Ombudsperson Institution in protecting and promoting rights and freedoms. Preserving the independence of the Ombudsperson Institution means greater public trust,” he noted.
He congratulated the Ombudsperson Institution on its 25th anniversary also via the social network X, promising continued support for its work.
“Safeguarding the independence of this institution means enhancing public trust. Full implementation of its recommendations by all institutions in Kosovo is vital, as a key safeguard of human rights and the rule of law, and part of Kosovo’s EU integration path. We will continue to support the work of the Ombudsperson Institution,” Orav wrote.
The meeting was also attended by representatives of other embassies accredited in Kosovo, as well as EULEX chief Pietro Barbano.
