Prenkaj: Six months of lacking political will and vision to find a solution
Former Kosovo ambassador to Italy Albert Prenkaj, commenting for Kosovo Online on today’s failure to form the “Kurti 3” government, said that during the past six months — the duration of the process of constituting the Kosovo Assembly — there has been a clear lack of political will and vision to reach the necessary solution. He added that today’s vote confirmed what representatives of several parties had previously stated — that they would not support Albin Kurti.
“Depending on their interests, the deputies of non-majority communities have aligned themselves with different political camps. During the six months of procedures for constituting Kosovo’s parliament, we have witnessed a lack of political will and vision to find the needed solution, which led to interventions by the Constitutional Court on several occasions.
Meanwhile, Kosovo is facing international sanctions from the European Union as well as a suspension of its strategic partnership with the United States; moreover, red lines have been set for Albin Kurti,” Prenkaj said.
He emphasized that the lack of coordination of Kurti’s previous government (‘Kurti 2’) with Kosovo’s strategic allies and sponsors, as well as the holding of dual public offices in violation of a Supreme Court ruling, had led to “a lack of reasons for governing.”
As Prenkaj explained, the next step is for President Vjosa Osmani to give the mandate to another nominee.
“If the new nominee does not present themselves, then the parliament will be dissolved and new elections will be called. I must point out that the vote for deputy speaker of parliament by the Serbian community has been submitted for review to the Constitutional Court by the Serb List. Therefore, we expect a ruling from the Constitutional Court, which could potentially declare that the Assembly was not constituted due to unconstitutional voting procedures,” Prenkaj concluded.
Today’s session of the Kosovo Assembly did not result in the formation of a new government, as Kurti — who held the mandate to form it — failed to secure sufficient support, that is, the required 61 votes from members of parliament.
