Kosovo President Justina Shiroka Pula met today with US Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin, stressing during the talks the need for the Kosovo-US Strategic Dialogue to resume urgently, describing it as a key instrument for deepening the partnership and advancing shared priorities.

Shiroka Pula presented Senator Jeanne Shaheen with the “Presidential Medal of Merit” in recognition of her unwavering support for Kosovo and her contribution to strengthening security, preserving peace and promoting stability in the region. It was also the first decoration awarded by the Kosovo President since taking office.

Shiroka Pula emphasized that Kosovo greatly valued the continued bipartisan support of the United States, reiterating that the US was an indispensable partner and strategic ally of Kosovo.

According to a statement from the President’s Office, Shiroka Pula stressed that NATO membership remained Kosovo’s primary objective.

“US support is crucial on this path. Kosovo’s membership in NATO would mean greater security and stability not only for our country, but for the entire region,” Shiroka Pula said.

She thanked Shaheen for advocating the continuation of the US military presence within KFOR.

“Shaheen’s letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio was described as an extremely significant initiative, underscoring the exceptional strategic importance of that presence for Kosovo’s security and for preventing regional tensions,” the statement from the Office of the President of Kosovo said.

Shiroka Pula also recalled Shaheen’s firm response following the incident in Banjska on September 24, 2023.

The election of Justina Shiroka Pula as President brought an end to Kosovo’s months-long institutional crisis, and according to Pristina-based analysts, the new President should safeguard constitutionality in the functioning of institutions and work to strengthen relations with international partners.

In Belgrade, however, observers do not see her as a figure capable of improving Kosovo’s international standing, although they believe she could potentially initiate dialogue among ethnic communities domestically.
