Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric spoke by telephone today with Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath, expressing his gratitude for Sri Lanka's principled and consistent support for preserving Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, reflected in its consistent position of not recognizing Kosovo's independence.

Djuric and Herath discussed strengthening bilateral relations, reinforcing political dialogue and opportunities for developing economic cooperation, the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

According to Serbia's top diplomat, despite the geographical distance between them, Serbia and Sri Lanka are connected by traditional friendship and cooperation based on the principles of the United Nations and the values of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Djuric also stressed that Serbia was particularly pleased to have had the opportunity to host a Sri Lankan delegation in Belgrade, led by Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra, at the Commemorative Meeting marking the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement.

“Minister Djuric expressed his gratitude to Sri Lanka for its principled and consistent support for preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia, which is also reflected in its consistent position of not recognizing the unilaterally declared independence of the so-called Kosovo,” the statement said.

Emphasizing that there was significant potential for further deepening bilateral relations, building on decades of friendship between the two countries, Serbia's top diplomat highlighted Serbia's interest in intensifying political dialogue and exchanging visits at high and the highest levels, as well as strengthening economic cooperation.

Pointing to the potential for closer cooperation in agriculture and tourism, Serbia's top diplomat proposed that Sri Lanka consider participating in the International Agricultural Fair in Novi Sad and the International Tourism Fair in Belgrade.

Djuric invited Sri Lanka to participate in the specialized exhibition Expo 2027, which will be held in Belgrade from May 15 to August 15 next year, noting that more than 140 countries have confirmed their participation to date.
