Shtuni: Suspension of Dialogue by the U.S. a step backward for Kosovo

International relations and security expert Ardian Shtuni criticized Kosovo’s caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti over his approach to strategic partners, particularly the United States.

Speaking on RTV21’s program Klik, Shtuni warned that suspensions and measures by the U.S. are possible, although he expressed hope they would not be carried out.

He emphasized that measures are always proportional to government actions, and described Kurti as “very creative and unpredictable” in the way he escalates relations with international allies.

“In principle, there are many possible measures. There may be various suspensions—I hope they will not be implemented. But I don’t want to speculate. The measures are proportional to the actions taken, and the current prime minister has shown himself to be quite creative and unpredictable in finding new ways to escalate relations with strategic partners,” Shtuni said.

Shtuni expressed concern that the Government of Kosovo is ignoring repeated warnings from the United States.

He stressed that failure to adopt a more constructive approach could have serious consequences for Kosovo’s international relations.

“Washington clearly requested a different, more constructive approach, in line with Kosovo’s obligations. That has not happened, despite numerous warnings. We are losing a lot of time,” Shtuni said.

He assessed that Kosovo’s authorities ignored previous warnings from Washington.

According to him, the government’s and Kurti’s irresponsible actions, along with the suspension of internationally mediated dialogue, jeopardize Kosovo’s international position and its closeness with its strategic partner, the U.S.

He argued that this is a loss for Kosovo and that someone must take responsibility for it.

“The U.S. commitment to the people of Kosovo is unwavering, but I think they are tired of the government’s and the caretaker prime minister’s immaturity and irresponsible actions. The suspension of dialogue is a step backward for Kosovo because it blocks the country’s diplomatic, economic, and security rapprochement with the U.S. It is a worrying signal,” Shtuni said.
