Spahiu: How Sorensen conducts the dialogue depends not only on support from his employers, but also on his own abilities

Political analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu told Kosovo Online that Denmark's upcoming six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union, which happens to be the home country of Peter Sorensen, the EU Representative for the Belgrade–Pristina dialogue, does not necessarily mean the EU will invest more energy in the dialogue process.

He points out that Denmark is not a leading EU country, even though it currently holds the presidency, since, as he says, Germany and France are the ones who shape EU policy on Kosovo and other matters.

"All EU member states have a certain role, and that role is proportional to the country’s strength. Denmark is not one of the major players in the EU. The fact that Peter Sorensen is from Denmark might mean more support during Denmark’s presidency, but it doesn't have to mean much, because the EU’s positions are set at the level of the entire union. How he, as a mediator, conducts the dialogue will depend not only on the support he receives from his employers, but also on how capable he is in leading the talks, especially now, when they should focus on implementing what has already been agreed upon, because that is the key point. Any agreement that isn’t implemented is not truly an agreement," Spahiu said.
