Spahiu: Reduction in KFOR troop numbers is good news, it means the situation is more secure
Political analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu stated that the reduction in the number of KFOR troops in Kosovo is good news because it shows that the security situation in Kosovo has improved, adding that there is no longer any danger for the Serbian community.
"That is good news. It means the situation is better and more secure. NATO has probably concluded that there is no danger. That is good news," Spahiu told Kosovo Online.
On the other hand, he said that the reduction in troop numbers is bad news for those who view the KFOR mission's presence as that of "permanent tourists in Kosovo."
He noted that Kosovo would lose some revenue with the departure of part of the contingent, but stressed that it is important for Pristina to learn to maintain economic self-sufficiency.
In his view, the situation in Kosovo has improved, while further developments will depend on internal issues, particularly the conflict between political factions.
"However, the conflict is not on a scale that could lead to a civil war in Kosovo. The only external threat Kosovo faces is an attack by the Serbian army, and they (NATO) have probably assessed that this will not happen, which is why they are reducing the number of troops," Spahiu said.
Speaking about the Serbian community, he assessed that there is no longer any danger.
"There is no longer any danger for the Serbian community in Kosovo unless a war breaks out between Serbia and Kosovo, and in the event of war, everyone could be at risk," Spahiu added, noting that integration and legal issues are the areas that still need attention.
