Stevic: Self-Determination still refuses to allow someone from the Serb List to be deputy speaker of the Assembly
The interim measure of the Constitutional Court, which prohibits MPs from undertaking any activities or initiating procedures for forming a new Government of Kosovo, expires in two days. Journalist from North Mitrovica, Lazar Stevic, says that even after that date, Self-Determination will “continue with the narrative it held before the court’s decision.” As he points out, they refuse to allow someone from the Serb List to be deputy speaker of the Assembly, even though this position is guaranteed by the Constitution to the largest Serbian party in parliament.
Stevic says that at this moment “everyone is confused as to whether the Assembly has been constituted or not.”
Although in several cases Self-Determination criticized the Constitutional Court’s decision on the Serb List’s appeal regarding the interim measure, in Stevic’s assessment, it actually suited them very well, since they proposed a candidate for prime minister, regardless of the fact that he could not be elected because of the Assembly’s blockade.
“They certainly used this time while the Assembly wasn’t functioning to try to ‘turn’ those MPs who didn’t want to vote for them, so that they now support the new government. We will see what happens, and whether the Assembly will elect a legitimate deputy speaker from the Serbian community, or whether Self-Determination and its coalition partners will continue to play this political game and push for representatives of the Serbian community who are a minority in parliament, and we all know this refers to Nenad Rasic and his party,” our interlocutor said.
He recalls that some MPs from Self-Determination said that if the Constitutional Court orders that the deputy speaker must come from the Serb List, they would not vote for that representative.
“If the blockade continues, new parliamentary elections will follow, as there are legal deadlines in case that happens. Most likely, after the local elections Kosovo will very soon also face new parliamentary elections,” Stevic concludes.
