US Embassy on dismissal of Serbian prosecutors: Kosovo's Constitution and laws guarantee representation of Kosovo Serbs in institutions

A spokesperson for the United States Embassy in Pristina told Kosovo Online, regarding the decision to dismiss Serbian prosecutors, that Kosovo's Constitution and laws guarantee the representation of Kosovo Serbs in Kosovo's institutions.

In a written response to Kosovo Online, the spokesperson for the United States Embassy further stated:

"We expect the Government of Kosovo to ensure that Kosovo Serbs have equal opportunities and can fully participate in Kosovo's political and civic life. We will continue to advocate for this," he said.

The European Union also reacted to the decision by Kosovo's acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, to sign decrees dismissing seven prosecutors from the Serbian community who had submitted their resignations in 2022, after the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council rejected requests to withdraw the resignations of five prosecutors and 15 members of support staff from the Serbian community at the Basic Prosecution Office in Mitrovica.

"This appears incompatible with the law, the principles of due process, and the overall requirements of the rule of law in Kosovo. The European Union calls on all relevant institutions to refrain from actions aimed at preventing the reintegration of members of the Serbian judicial staff," the statement from Brussels reads.

The German Embassy in Pristina stated that it is concerned over the acceptance of the resignations of Serbian prosecutors that had already been withdrawn.
