US Embassy issues demonstration alert for Kosovo on September 16

The United States Embassy in Pristina has issued an alert about possible demonstrations in several cities across Kosovo on September 16, following the verdict against four former KLA leaders in The Hague.

According to a statement on the US Embassy's website, several organizations are planning large demonstrations on Wednesday, September 16, in central Pristina and other major cities across Kosovo.

"These demonstrations may cause large crowds, road closures, and severe traffic disruptions. It is advised to limit travel to the immediate area of your residence and to avoid travel to your workplace and schools if your route passes through impacted areas, as you may not be able to complete the journey in a timely manner," the alert states.

Embassy personnel are advised to avoid unnecessary travel near demonstrations and not to send children to school on September 16 due to expected traffic disruptions.

"The Embassy will be open, and limited consular services will be provided on an as-needed basis," it added.

The recommended precautions include avoiding areas where demonstrations are taking place, exercising caution if you unexpectedly find yourself in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests, and being aware of your surroundings.

The notice also included the Embassy's address and telephone numbers for the State Department's Consular Affairs office.

Meanwhile, the Kosovo Police said that it was planning security measures ahead of September 16, aimed at safely managing gatherings, maintaining public order and ensuring the normal flow of traffic.

Asked by Kosovo Online whether it would increase its presence in Serbian areas in Kosovo on September 16, KFOR said that the mission continuously adjusts its presence to the security environment and operational requirements to ensure that it remains effective at all times, but does not comment on specific operational measures.

On Wednesday, the first-instance verdict will be handed down in The Hague against KLA leaders Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi, who are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The prosecution has requested sentences of 45 years in prison for each of them, while the defense has sought acquittals.

People in Kosovo are hoping for their acquittal and return. Clocks counting down to the verdict have been installed across Kosovo. On Saturday, a support rally, the "March for Freedom," was held in central Pristina.
