US on KFOR force optimization: Process should be coordinated with all parties, preserving Western Balkan stability a priority

A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Pristina noted today that NATO was currently carrying out an “optimization of KFOR’s force posture,” stating that the process would proceed gradually and in close coordination with all relevant parties.

“NATO is currently conducting an optimization of KFOR’s force posture. The process will be gradual and closely coordinated with all relevant parties,” the US Embassy in Pristina stated.

The Embassy also stressed the importance of cooperation between security institutions in Kosovo and international missions.

“We expect continued close cooperation among security institutions in Kosovo, KFOR, EULEX, and other international partners throughout the process of optimizing KFOR’s force posture,” the response stated.

Regarding the security situation, the United States reiterated that regional stability in the Western Balkans remained a priority.

“The United States prioritizes preserving regional stability in the Western Balkans. We value KFOR’s commitment to supporting a safe and stable environment that ensures long-term security for all communities,” the US Embassy spokesperson said.

Asked whether the gradual transition away from KFOR’s permanent presence on the main bridge over the Ibar River implied opening it to unrestricted traffic and whether the United States supported such a move, the US Embassy in Kosovo did not directly answer the question concerning the opening of the bridge.

KFOR Commander Major General Ozkan Ulutas said in an exclusive interview with Kosovo Online that KFOR’s optimization did not constitute a transfer of KFOR’s mandate or responsibilities to the Kosovo Police, nor did it represent a withdrawal or reduction of NATO’s commitments to Kosovo.

He stressed that KFOR retained its security mandate and would continue to implement it fully and impartially, taking into account the concerns of all communities in Kosovo, including the Serbian community.
