Vucic: There will be no negotiations over whom Kosovo and Metohija belongs to; Everything is clearly stated in Serbia’s Constitution
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said today that there can be no negotiations over whose territory Kosovo and Metohija is or to whom it belongs, stressing that everything is clearly defined in Serbia’s Constitution and that Serbia will always adhere to it.
“There have been difficult talks regarding Kosovo and Metohija, but even in the most difficult moments we have always known how to say that we are willing to discuss everything, and we will always be willing to do so. However, we will not discuss or negotiate whose territory it is or to whom Kosovo and Metohija belongs. You know what is written in our Constitution, and for us that is Holy Scripture. We will always abide by it,” Vucic said at the “Serbia, One Family” rally.
He asked those gathered to greet with applause the Serbs from Kosovo who had come to Belgrade to attend the event.
“Thank you for preserving our name and our identity, and we will always stand by you,” the Serbian president said.
He added that there had also been difficult moments at the United Nations, but that he had succeeded in defending the country's interests.
“We knew we were going up against the world's biggest, most powerful and strongest countries. Yet, united, we succeeded in standing our ground and demonstrating that a small freedom-loving nation can defeat even the most powerful. When we stand together, there is nothing we cannot achieve,” Vucic said.
Several thousand Serbs from Serbian communities across Kosovo gathered in Belgrade today to attend the “Serbia, One Family” rally, held in front of the National Assembly building on the eve of Vidovdan.
Vucic also said that, even under the most difficult circumstances, Serbia had preserved peace and its independence while implementing numerous infrastructure projects and strengthening its economy.
Among other things, he stressed that Serbia must make every effort to preserve its military neutrality and continue making its own decisions independently.
“We want to protect and defend our own skies ourselves. We want always to take pride in the strength of our aircraft, our air defense system, our armed forces and our police. That has no price—that is freedom,” Vucic emphasized.
He added that citizens would have the opportunity tomorrow, during the military display marking Vidovdan, to see the military capabilities Serbia currently possesses.
“You will see everything Serbia has today and why no one will be able to attack Serbia,” Vucic said.
The president also stated that Serbia remains on its European path and should do everything necessary to accelerate that process, while at the same time preserving its traditional friendships.
“We will not jeopardize our traditional friendships with those who stood by us in our most difficult moments, such as China during the coronavirus pandemic, or with Russia. We do not abandon our friends when times are hard. We preserve those friendships because friendship is not only about being together when everything is easy and going well, but also when times are difficult. Will we accelerate our European path? Yes, we will. We will fulfill all of our obligations,” Vucic said.
He also announced that he would resign in several weeks' time.
“I will remain president for only a few more weeks, after which I will submit my resignation. Nothing lasts forever, and thank God it does not,” Vucic said.
