The Government of Kosovo has decided to once again postpone the population census, this time to April 5 next year, as reported by Telegrafi.

The population census was initially scheduled to begin in September of this year; however, the government first delayed it to November 1, and since it did not commence even then, there has been another postponement.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti says that the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) is the entity responsible for the population census.

"During the past week, I used my legal authority to change the leadership of KAS as the first step to increase the efficiency of the process," he said.

He added that the information letter he had received from the acting director of KAS, Avni Kastrati, proved that the population census process had not been well-managed, however, assurances had been made that mistakes from the past would not be repeated.

"The population census is postponed to the period from April 5th to May 17th, 2024, for the implementation of Eurostat principles," he said.

The last population census in Kosovo was conducted in 2011, estimating the total population to be around 1.8 million.

Residents of the northern Kosovo municipalities of Leposavic, Zubin Potok, Zvecan, and North Mitrovica were not included in this census because they did not participate.
