Barac: Kurti's pyrrhic victory, post-election "gymnastics" ahead, Serbs show unity
Srdjan Barac, an associate at the Center for Social Stability, stated that the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections in Kosovo indicate that Albin Kurti has achieved a Pyrrhic victory and faces post-election "gymnastics," while the success of the Serbian List has demonstrated that Serbs can be united and politically oppose all forms of repression.
"This is a Pyrrhic victory for Albin Kurti, and the definition of the election is that the results have united the Serbs. The epilogue of such an electoral result is that Albin Kurti must engage in electoral gymnastics, and it is questionable whether he will succeed," Barac said for Kosovo Online. Barac believes that Kurti will try in every way to achieve a majority in order to form a government.
"Whether there will be a post-election manifesto in the form of demolishing some polling places, whether he will try with votes coming from abroad, or perhaps Rasic will snatch that one seat from the Serbs, although I think there is a very slim chance of that. But we have a politician who looks to not only bend every legal regulation but completely disregard it. Therefore, I would not be surprised if he turns to such a method that would be an absolute destruction of all principles, rules, and regulations," Barac believes.
He doubts that the opposition parties, regardless of the results, will be able to form a stable government, and does not rule out the possibility of repeat elections.
"It is a very difficult legal construction when we say that we have three parties, plus minorities. It would be very complicated for them to form a majority that would be stable and could create a policy that would be firm and resistant to challenges, which are certainly not small in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija, primarily speaking of economic problems, corruption, crime, their disorientation in the geopolitical upheavals of the space and time. In such a 'melting pot', I think it will be complicated for them as well. I leave a great probability that maybe we are going to new elections, that we will not have a majority from this election result," Barac emphasizes.
He stresses that, when it comes to the Serbian community, the main message is that the Serbs are united.
"Serbs who have managed to survive despite all the pressures send a strong message primarily to the international factor. Serbs united around one political idea are Serbs who can resist," Barac assesses.
With such electoral results, Serbs in Kosovo have a political way to fight not only for their rights but also against legal, economic, and physical attacks and psychological violence.
"That is a great success, and I think the policy in which we are gathered around one political option is a policy in which we can somehow resist and that at the same time is a very clear message that the international community must understand and must think about how to create political directions and concrete policies that are good for them with the Serbian population in the area of Kosovo and Metohija," Barac emphasizes.
Therefore, he believes that both the celebration by Albin Kurti and the insults directed at the opposition are a consequence of the fact that the Serbian List won the most votes.
"He is irritated by this political situation because the main imperative of Albin Kurti's politics was to expel the Serbs from the territory of Kosovo and Metohija and to prevent the resistance of the Serbian population. And this happens when we are divided," Barac concludes.
