The former president of Albania, Sali Berisha, who is leading today's opposition protests in Tirana against the Albanian government, was attacked on the Boulevard of Martyrs of the Nation, the correspondent of Kosovo Online reports.

An unknown assailant punched him in the head, and then Berisha's security caught him and beat him.

There is great tension in the center of Tirana because the Government has banned access to the place where the EU-Western Balkan Summit is being held today.

Berisha previously announced that the opposition would fill the streets and squares of Tirana in order to "defend European values", which, he claimed, were being threatened by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.

At the moment of the attack on Berisha, Ilir Meta, also the former president of Albania, was walking beside him. Meta gave a speech at today's protest.
