Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko emphasized that a solution for Kosovo can be achieved only under the auspices of the UN Security Council.

Speaking to RIA Novosti, he said it is obvious that all attempts by the EU to act as a mediator were doomed to failure from the very beginning.

“This is because a party that recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed Kosovo, contrary to international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1244, cannot be a mediator in the normalization of relations, a fair mediator, as they like to say, between Belgrade and Pristina,” Botsan-Kharchenko said, RT Balkan reports.

He added that “this is why negotiations on this issue under the auspices of the EU are completely ineffective and produce no results.”

“I do not expect them to produce anything, but the only path, truly, toward a complete solution, toward respect for Resolution 1244, is linked to the work of the UN Security Council,” Botsan-Kharchenko underlined.

The ambassador also pointed out that the authorities in Pristina are carrying out ethnic cleansing against Kosovo Serbs.

“In fact, this is, and it can be said openly, an undeclared gradual ethnic cleansing. In other words – the expulsion of Serbs from the territory of Kosovo and Metohija, the creation of unbearable living conditions for them. And all of this is being done, we will not now recall what exactly is meant, but this takeover of northern Kosovo and Metohija by Pristina was happening, is happening, and, unfortunately, we must assume that it will continue,” Botsan-Kharchenko said.
