Petar Donic, an associate of the organization New Third Way, believes that the Board of Peace, whose formation was initiated by US President Donald Trump, is the backbone of the new world he has ushered in, but that it will hardly be able to replace the United Nations, as it is tied to specific leaders and concrete solutions.

“The Board of Peace is definitely the backbone of the new world he has brought. We can see several things there, one of which is that on the American side investments, attention, and focus on multilateral institutions, the United Nations, have been reduced,” Donic said.

According to him, the United Nations have in the previous period shown that they have a drastically smaller role and that they are unable to respond quickly, in a time that requires rapid decisions.

That is why he believes that by initiating the Board of Peace, Trump has shown that he wants to bring together states with which he can react quickly.

“The first project through this Board is Gaza. He wants to highlight what he can do there, and in that context states were invited – a mix of those that can exert influence, traditional allies, with the addition of those that have an Islamic background and can help with that narrative. Or someone who proved during Trump’s first and second terms to be a good ally and good for negotiations. Many were invited according to a certain key, but not everything followed that key. That creates division, because some were invited and some were not, but only Trump can know that,” Donic said.

He points out that the Board of Peace will have difficulty replacing the United Nations, because the initiative is tied to specific leaders and concrete solutions, while the UN are conceived on different foundations.

“The United Nations are conceived in a completely different way. States are involved regardless of personal solutions, it is of a longer-term nature and slower. I do not see the Board as a replacement, but it is definitely a kind of competition for resolving shock and difficult issues,” Donic said.

He therefore believes that in the coming period there will be a kind of “hybrid solution.”

“Both will exist. Some issues will be placed before the United Nations, and some before the Board of Peace,” Donic added.
