Drecun: Pristina’s militarization is a direct threat to the security of Serbs in Kosovo

Deliveries of new weapons and Pristina’s military cooperation with certain countries point to the intensive militarization of Kosovo and Metohija and pose serious security risks, Milovan Drecun, chairman of the Serbian Parliament’s Committee on Defense and Internal Affairs, told RTS.

Drecun emphasized that since the start of the final phase of the transformation of the Kosovo Security Force, the equipping and training of that formation has intensified, which, as he says, is contrary to Resolution 1244.

“In the past four years, 430 million euros have been invested in that so-called Kosovo army, mostly in equipment and armament. We see an increase in the military budget, the creation of bilateral and intelligence agreements, as well as the participation of KSF members in international military exercises,” Drecun said.

He added that work is also underway to establish a domestic military industry, including the announced production of ammunition, drones, and armored vehicles.

“When you look at all of this, you see a complete militarization of Kosovo and Metohija,” Drecun said.

Speaking about the messages Pristina is sending, Drecun believes this is preparation for offensive action.

“These are not defensive, but offensive capabilities. Pristina is preparing for a military landing operation and seeks interoperability with NATO member states, primarily Croatia and Albania,” he stressed.

A direct threat to the survival of the Serbian people

According to him, the main message is directed at Belgrade.

“The message is – hands off Kosovo and Metohija. There is a real danger that under certain geopolitical circumstances they could attempt to enter northern Kosovo, which would mean a direct threat to the security and survival of the Serbian people,” Drecun warned.

Speaking about Serbia’s response, he emphasized that the most important role of defense capabilities is preventive.

“The best army is the one that constantly prepares for war but never enters it. Strengthening our defense capabilities has a deterrent effect and serves to preserve peace,” Drecun concluded.
