KDI: Blocking appointment of Serb List MPs to parliamentary committees undermines community representation
The Kosovo Democratic Institute (KDI) has expressed concern over the failure to approve the Serb List’s proposal to appoint its MPs to parliamentary committees, saying that this prevents them from participating in an important part of parliamentary work and restricts their ability to represent the interests of the Serbian community.
In a press release, KDI said that the proposal to appoint Serb List MPs had failed to secure the necessary support both at today’s session and at the session held on October 15, with the lack of a quorum cited as the reason.
According to KDI, this occurred even though, on both occasions, there were enough MPs present in the chamber to vote on other items on the agenda, Ekonomia Online reported.
KDI said that the failure to resolve the issue prevented Serb List MPs from participating in the work of parliamentary committees and restricted their ability to represent the interests of the community they represent.
“Given that the committees began their work almost a month ago, this situation prevents the proposed MPs from participating in an important part of parliamentary work,” the statement said.
According to the institute, the lack of representation on committees prevents MPs from participating in the consideration of draft laws, oversight of institutions and other parliamentary processes.
KDI stressed that the representation of communities in the Kosovo Assembly was a constitutional right that must be guaranteed through their effective participation in parliamentary structures and decision-making processes.
“Delays in these appointments prevent the exercise of this right and risk undermining inclusiveness in parliamentary processes,” the statement said.
KDI called on all parliamentary groups to resolve the issue as soon as possible, in accordance with the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Kosovo Assembly.
The institute stressed that this was necessary to ensure the effective representation of the Serbian community on parliamentary committees and enable all MPs to exercise their representative mandate.
