Fajon: The EU expects Serbia and Kosovo to reach a compromise by April, before the local elections
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, Tanja Fajon, said today that the European Union expected Serbia and Kosovo to reach a compromise in the dialogue by April this year, when local elections in the municipalities in the north of Kosovo were scheduled.
"It is very important that we do not have a further escalation of tensions. It is very important for us and for the entire European community to see that both parties are really committed to finding a compromise before the local elections in April. It is important to do everything to normalize the situation and the dialogue led by the European Union must continue," Fajon told "Koha".
She pointed out that she received assurances from Pristina politicians that they were ready to start talks as soon as possible based on the Franco-German proposal.
However, Fajon added that the parties were also required to implement the agreements from the previous dialogue, including the one on the formation of the Community of Serb-majority Municipalities.
"The dialogue must continue and all agreements must be fulfilled, including the formation of the CSM. This is very important in the coming weeks and months. That is why I reiterated the views that the authorities of Kosovo, and of course Serbia, must do everything to normalize the situation and not there will be further escalation," Fajon said.
Asked about unofficial documents that talk about the division and exchange of territories, which were previously published in Slovenia, Fajon said that such discussions were dangerous and against European values.
"It is important that Kosovo and Serbia finalize the agreement, especially the Brussels agreement from 2013, which has many items that must be fulfilled. We are a few weeks away from the elections and I tried to encourage and convince the Kosovo authorities that they really take care of the Serbian communities and municipalities, so that the citizens would feel safe, so that they would not be afraid of the Kosovo authorities," said Fajon.
