Gauillon: Pogrom against Serbs in Kosovo a crime against Christianity and European civilization
Arnaud Gauillon, Director of the Office for Public and Cultural Diplomacy of the Government of Serbia, stated today that the March pogrom against Serbs in Kosovo represents a crime against Christianity and European civilization. Marking the 22nd anniversary of the March pogrom against Serbs in Kosovo, Gauillon recalled that such “horrific violence, driven by ethnic and religious motives,” had not been seen in Europe since the end of World War II.
He pointed out that, in just a few days, more than 1,000 Serbian homes were destroyed, 35 Orthodox churches and monasteries were demolished and desecrated, and thousands of people were expelled from their homes within only a few hours.
“In response to the barbarity of extremists and despite the silence of many around the world, on March 18, 2004, I decided that I would help the Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija. I did not yet know how or when, but I knew that I would not sit idly by and watch these horrors affecting a brave and proud European people about whom my father and grandfather had told me so much. I founded the humanitarian organization ‘Solidarity for Kosovo,’ and a year later, I arrived in Kosovo for the first time, driving a van full of humanitarian aid. Since then, my life has been inextricably linked with the Serbs and Serbia,” Gauillon emphasized.
The humanitarian organization “Solidarity for Kosovo” has been assisting the Serbian community in Kosovo for more than two decades through numerous projects—from humanitarian convoys, farm construction, and church restoration, to the distribution of livestock, greenhouses, and basic necessities—while also actively working to raise international awareness of their situation, particularly in France, through media, public forums, and other outreach activities.
“Today, in my capacity as Director of the Office for Public and Cultural Diplomacy, I continue this mission through institutional work, striving to inform the international public in foreign languages about developments in Kosovo and Metohija. We must never forget this crime against the Serbs, which is at the same time a crime against Christianity and European civilization,” Gauillon concluded.
