Gogic: Kosovo did not receive the desired outcome from the EU Foreign Affairs Committee
Political scientist Ognjen Gogic emphasized that the European Parliament’s stance, which called for an independent investigation into the Ibar-Lepenac canal explosion, was not the outcome Kosovo had hoped for. According to him, Pristina wanted the European Parliament to support its narrative that Serbia orchestrated the attack.
"The most important aspect is that the European Parliament did not prejudge blame for the incident. The EP took the position that an independent investigation is necessary to establish the facts. This is not the outcome Kosovo desired. Kosovo did not approach the EP with the expectation that it would call for an investigation but rather hoped to hear support for its accusations that Serbia orchestrated the attack. That is the most significant takeaway from this event," Gogic explained.
He questioned why the EP committee addressed the issue, given that it is not a judicial body responsible for presenting evidence. According to Gogic, the European Parliament should refrain from discussing the matter until other relevant authorities establish certain facts.
"This is a serious incident, and rumors and speculations are unwelcome. Kosovo likely brought this matter to the EP with the help of certain allies it has there—some parliamentary groups that have historically supported Kosovo on other issues. However, it became evident that there is no consensus on this issue within the committee," he noted.
Gogic argued that Serbia has nothing to prove since the accusations are baseless.
"There is no need to give importance to such events or to legitimize Gërvalla by sharing a platform with her and engaging in discussions. It might be better to rise above the situation and avoid engaging in baseless and unfounded polemics. Even Serbia, which was not present or represented at the session, can be satisfied with the committee's outcome because the accusations being made are unprovable," Gogic concluded.
