Haxhiu: Parliamentary actions were political, opposed to demarcation with Montenegro and the CSM
Kosovo’s acting Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, stated that the case being conducted against her before the Basic Court in Pristina is unjust, and that the actions in the Kosovo Assembly were political.
“It’s been nearly 10 years that we’ve been facing an unjust process, but the rules require us to be here. The session has been postponed to September 2. This postponement is completely senseless—they are accusing us of possessing property, but what crime have we committed? These were political actions aimed at halting the border demarcation with Montenegro, and also an expression of opposition to the Community (of Serb-majority Municipalities). But of course, I will be here until this process is concluded,” Haxhiu emphasized.
When asked by a journalist how she would respond if the opposition were to use the same methods she once employed, Haxhiu stressed that such actions are taken only when there is a threat, but, as she noted, the current government would not engage in such behavior.
“I have said multiple times that if our government were to take actions against the state of Kosovo or against the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo, then of course opposition actions would be necessary, including tear gas. But I do not believe there will be any agreement made by our government or Prime Minister Albin Kurti that would harm the country. Therefore, the opposition will not need such measures or actions,” Haxhiu added.
Attorney Musa Damati, who represents Pal Ljekaj in this case, stated that his client is abroad due to personal obligations and was therefore unable to attend today’s hearing.
He added that Haxhiu’s presence at the hearing was surprising even for the court, due to the Assembly’s constitutive session.
“As for Ms. Haxhiu, I was surprised by her presence in court today. I believe this case has already become a marathon process, as by the end of this year it will have been a decade since the alleged criminal offense occurred. This matter is clearly heading toward absolute statute of limitations. I believe Haxhiu’s presence was unexpected for the court and others present, because according to the Assembly’s agenda, the session was scheduled to start at 10:00 AM, while this court session was held at 9:30 AM, which I have pointed out in past sessions,” said Damati.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for September 2, 2025, at 9:30 AM.
