Index: More countries recognize Palestine than Kosovo
During the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, several important countries, including France and other European states, officially recognized Palestine as an independent state, thereby significantly strengthening international support for Palestinian statehood. According to Croatia’s Index, current data show that more countries recognize Palestine than Kosovo.
Until recently, recognition of Palestine was widespread primarily among African, Asian, and Latin American countries, but in recent years an increasing number of European states have joined in.
According to the latest reports, 157 UN member states have recognized the State of Palestine, representing about 81 percent of all UN members. Among the most recent states to officially recognize Palestine are France, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Malta, and Monaco, Index.hr writes.
Recognition by less than 45 percent of UN member states
By contrast, as of 2025, a total of 84 UN member states have recognized Kosovo. It should be noted that some countries, such as Madagascar and Libya, have withdrawn or frozen their recognition in recent years.
Among the countries that do not recognize Kosovo are Serbia, Russia, China, as well as five EU member states, including Spain and Greece. Thus, Kosovo is recognized by less than 45 percent of UN member states.
Although widely recognized, the State of Palestine still does not have full UN membership status, and since 2012 has held only observer status without voting rights. Kosovo, while it has established institutions, continues to face numerous obstacles to international legitimacy due to disagreements among member states.
