State Secretary at the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nevena Jovanovic stated that the latest incidents in North Mitrovica, during which “members of the so-called Kosovo Police arrested two citizens of Serbian nationality for expressing a political opinion by booing the illegitimate mayor,” represent yet another in a series of open attempts by Pristina’s institutions to carry out repression.

Jovanovic wrote on the social network X that such actions, especially at a time when the international community is clearly calling for de-escalation and consistent respect for basic human rights, unequivocally testify to the continuation of a worrying escalation of pressure on the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija.

“It is necessary that those responsible for such human rights violations be clearly identified and held accountable. Given this course of events, we express serious concern and warn that such practices represent a dangerous obstacle to efforts to stabilize the situation on the ground. The Republic of Serbia will continue, by all available diplomatic means, to insist on the protection of the rights and freedoms of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija,” the State Secretary emphasized.

The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects international missions on the ground to take appropriate measures.

“We expect international missions on the ground, within their mandates, to take urgent and appropriate measures to prevent the abuse of police powers for political purposes, ensure full protection of the basic rights of Serbs, and bring an end to the pressure and intimidation they face on a daily basis,” Jovanovic concluded.
