Military and political analyst Fadil Kajtazi is convinced that the draft resolution introduced by U.S. congressmen supporting Kosovo’s membership in NATO will eventually bear fruit, noting that every objective pursued by the United States in the Balkans since 1989 has originated from initiatives in the U.S. Congress.

“Initiatives by U.S. congressmen on matters concerning American foreign policy usually represent a procedure through which the U.S. Department of State seeks to achieve a particular foreign policy goal. If we look at the period from 1989 to 1999, from the time the former Yugoslavia began to disintegrate, everything the Americans wanted to achieve in this region began in the form of congressional resolutions,” Kajtazi told Kosovo Online.

For that reason, he believes that the resolution supporting Kosovo’s integration into NATO is part of a process that could ultimately lead to that objective.

“Within American circles, the idea has taken hold that the Balkan region can be stabilized if a solution is found to end hostilities and territorial ambitions pursued through military force. For the past 25 years, they have attempted to achieve this by developing democracy in the states involved in conflict, but that approach did not succeed,” Kajtazi assessed.

Because of this, as well as broader geopolitical changes, he is convinced that the initiative by U.S. congressmen will produce results.

“The best example that hostilities cease is the example of the military balance between Croatia and Serbia, where Serbia’s policy ceased being aggressive toward the stronger side and turned toward the weaker side – Kosovo. Because of this logic, and because of major changes at the level of global politics, I believe that the initiative by the U.S. congressmen will bear fruit,” Kajtazi concluded.
